ABOUT US

MAISH (Mpumalanga Artificial Intelligence Student Hackathon) is a provincial hackathon competition for student innovators and hackers, hosted jointly by the University of Mpumalanga's School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences and the Tshwane University of Technology's Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (eMalahleni Campus). MAISH supports the National Development Plan (Vision 2030) of the Government of the Republic of South Africa by advancing the objectives of Chapter 9, which focuses on improving education, training and innovation. MAISH SUCCESS

The previous MAISH hackathons have demonstrated tangible impact through the development of innovative, AI-driven systems and meaningful prize recognition for student excellence. In 2025, ten fully functional AI solutions were built within three days, addressing critical sectors such as agriculture, carbon emission monitoring, career guidance, pest detection, and sustainable farming. Notable systems included AgriConnect (AI-powered disease detection, livestock monitoring, and rainfall prediction), ClearSky Intelligence (real-time carbon emission tracking and compliance reporting), and PestVisionAI 2.1 (automated pest detection with smart pesticide activation).

To reward innovation and technical excellence, winners received high-value prizes including Dell laptops, Samsung smartphones and tablets, smartwatches, and laptop bags sponsored by industry partners. These awards, supported by strong sponsorship funding, not only recognized outstanding performance but also provided students with tools to continue developing their solutions beyond the hackathon. Collectively, the prizes and production-ready AI systems reflect MAISH's success in translating student creativity into practical, scalable digital innovations. Additionally, the winning group were given an opportunity to write and attain leading industry certifications and work placements.
